Prospan ®  Cough Syrup is produced in Germany by Engelhard Arzneimittel .Cough Syrup is a natural product and contains an active ingredient, which is purely herbal.The special dried ivy leaf extract contained in Prospan® contains saponins that loosen a cough. Breathing is made easier through widening of the bronchi and the tough mucus located in the bronchi is liquefied. The muscles in the bronchi are relaxed and the tough mucus is loosened. This reduces the annoying urge of wanting to cough. Prospan ® Cough Syrup is mucolytic, spasmolytic and cough relieving.   Prospan ® Cough Syrup is free from alcohol, sugar and colourings and has a pleasant taste of cherry. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for children, but at the same time it is also an effective medicine for adults for fighting against the complaints of bronchial illnesses.

Acute catarrh (inflammation) of the respiratory tract accompanied by coughing; symptomatic treatment of chronic inflammatory bronchial disease.

In rare cases, Prospan ® Cough Syrup may have a laxative effect due to the content of sorbitol in the product.

Advers effects have not become known with the simultaneous ingestion of Prospan ® Cough Syrup and other medicines. This preparation can therfore be combined safely with other medicines, such as antibiotics for example.

With enclosed measuring cup: unless otherwise prescribed, infants(<1 year) and small children(1-5 years) take 2.5 ml 3 times daily, schoolchildren(6-9 years) and adolescents (>10 years) take 5ml 3 times daily and adults take 5-7.5 ml of solution 3 time daily.

Duration of use:duration of treatment depends on the type and severity of the clinical picture; however, treatment should last for at least one week even in minor inflammations of the respiratory tract. Treatment with Prospan ® Cough Syrup should be maintained for 2-3 days after symptoms have subsided, in order to ensure lasting success of therapy. In the event of presistant complaints or the appearance of shortness of breath, fever as well as purulent or bloody expectoration, adoctors should be consulted immediately.

For how long can PROSPAN® preparations be used?

No long-term studies in which Prospan was taken for periods of several months are available. We can only issue a statement based on a 4-week therapy with Prospan. The results are published in the special issue (Meyer-Wegener, J. etal.)”Efeu  versus Ambroxol bei chronischer Bronchitis” (Ivy versus Ambroxol in chronic bronchitis) ZFA 69 (1993), No. 3, pp. 61-66).

A reduction of efficacy during longer periods of use is not to be expected, although a definite statement on this subject cannot be issued due to a lack of data.

Generally speaking it is important in cases of bronchitis to consult a physician without delay if the symptoms persist for a longer period, if shortness of breath, fever or purulent or bloody expectoration occurs.

What is the minimum age for use of Prospan® preparations?

** The syrup should only used in children < 1 year of age after consulting physician. Intake at this age should always be closely monitored since occurrence of diarrhea and vomiting requires particular mention in children less than 1 year of age compared older children, for this reason, the information on adverse events should also be complied with.

Is Prospan® suitable for enteral tube administration?

Prospan Cough Syrup is the best suited to enteral tube administration.

When must Prospan® cough syrup not be used and what precautions must be observed?

These medical drug products must not used in the presence of a hypersensitivity to one of their components!

Prospan Cough Syrup contain the sugar substitute sorbitol and should therefore not be taken by persons with a fructose intolerance (carbohydrate metabolism disorder) until the physician in charge of treatment has been consulted.

Can Prospan® preparations be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

In decades of clinical, use of ivy leaves and their extracts, no negative effects have been observed or reported to us to date in fetuses arising from use during pregnancy from 1965 to 1997 we sold approx. 35 million Prospan in Germany, and since 1997 we have sold approx. 112 million packages worldwide, Regardless of this, women using ivy leaf preparations during first trimester should make sure sufficient amounts of zinc are ingested (ESCOP monograph Ivy Leaf, 2nd  edition, completely revised and expanded; Thieme Verlag 2003, 241-247).

On the other hand, since no studies are no file regarding passage of the active substance into the placenta and milk, we cannot issue a recommendation for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Can Prospan be used in patients with hepatic dysfunctions?

In view of the components of the products and based on decades of experience with prospan, no such precautions need be applied to these products when properly used. According to the current state of knowledge, it can be assumed only that at least a certain proportion of alpha-hederin (a component of the dry extract ivy leaves) is eliminated unaltered renally.

Do the prospan contain gluten?

The protein gluten which occurs in nearly all cereal grains (except rice and maize) is not contained in prospan preparations.

Are changes in the taste and odor of prospan cough syrup possible?

Minimum changes in taste or odor may result due to the natural component dry extract of ivy leaves. Temperature changes during transport and storage as well as exposure to direct sunlight or failure to close a bottle after use, may affect the taste or odor. 1-How prospan relives coughing?

Prospan® liquefies mucus, relaxes convulsive cough and calms coughing. In this way, Prospan® combat the typical complaints of bronchitis: increased formation of viscous mucus, shortness of breath and irritation of throat. Troublesome and painful coughing is calmed, but not blocked, which is important for being able to cough up the mucus and thereby allow for trouble-free deep breathing.

3-What causes cough?

Coughing has a purpose. It is your body’s way of keeping unwanted stuff from getting into your lungs. Coughing helps clear extra mucus from your airways (small tubes in your lungs). This extra mucus could be caused by smoking, a cold, a lung infection or a lung disease, like asthma or COPD.
A cough may be cause by a condition not related to your lungs, such as heartburn, some medications, or throat irritants (for example, dust, pollution, chemicals in your workplace or home).
