Iron has been recognized as an essential nutrient for more than a century. Indeed, iron-deficiency anemia is the world's most common nutritional deficiency disease. 

FeraMAX® 100 is an oral iron supplement formulated with polysaccharides in a stable complex. It is manufactured by a specialized process whereby the iron is coated with polysaccharides (starches/sugars). This coating allows the iron to pass through the stomach relatively intact where it is absorbed through the small intestine and is then delivered to the bloodstream.

  • It is a dark brown powder which, when dissolved in water forms a very dark brown solution.
  • It is virtually tasteless and odorless.
  • It is an organic complex and contains no free ions, also described as being non-ionic.
  • Due to the polysaccharide coating (matrix) it is electrically neutral.

FeraMAX® 100 does not contain lactose, gluten or sulphuric compounds in its formulations. These are the most common ingredients that patients are concerned about. It does contain artificial coloring agents and trace amounts of sodium.

FeraMAX®100 (polysaccharide iron complex) is indicated for:
The Treatment of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia
Iron is required for the formation of hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochromes and peroxidase
Iron is a factor in the maintenance of good health and helps to form red blood cells.

Contraindication

FeraMAX® 100 (polysaccharide-iron complex) is contraindicated in:
-Hemosiderosis
-Hemochromatosis
- Known hypersensitivity to any of the components of this product

Some people may experience gastrointestinal side effects.

Usual adult dose of FeraMAX® 100 is one capsule daily or as directed by a health care practitioner. FeraMAX® 100 allows for once a day dosing for patients who require a higher dose of elemental iron.

1-How Iron Strorage in body?

The adult human body contains iron in two major pools:

1- functional iron in hemoglobin, myoglubin and enzyme

2- storage iron in ferritin, hemosiderin, and transferrin.

2-What foods provide iron?

There are two forms of dietary iron: heme and nonheme. Heme iron is derived from hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to cells. Heme iron is found in animal foods that originally contained hemoglobin, such as red meats, fish, and poultry. Iron in plant foods such as lentils and beans is arranged in a chemical structure called nonheme iron .This is the form of iron added to iron-enriched and iron-fortified foods. Heme iron is absorbed better than nonheme iron, but most dietary iron is nonheme iron.

3-Why do people take iron?

Iron supplements are most often used for certain types of anemia. Anemia can cause fatigue and other symptoms. If you have symptoms of anemia, seek care from your health care provider. Don't try to treat it on your own.
Iron supplements are often used to treat anemia caused by:
    pregnancy
    heavy menstrual periods
    kidney disease
    chemotherapy
Iron supplements have also been studied for treatment of ADHD. While early data suggested a benefit, more study is needed before iron can be recommended for ADHD.

4-Can we get iron naturally from foods?

For most people, a good diet provides enough iron. Natural food sources of iron include:
    Meat, fish, and poultry
    Vegetables, like spinach, kale, and broccoli
    Dried fruits and nuts
    Beans, lentils, and peas
Iron is also added to many fortified foods, such as cereals and enriched breads.

5-Why is FeraMAX® 150 considered a Natural Health Product?

Health Canada regulations stipulate that all oral iron supplements are now registered as Natural Heath Products and not under the old system of assigning them a Drug Identification Number (DIN). All oral iron products currently on the market have had their DIN’s discontinued and their numbers reassigned to the NHPD (Natural Health Product Directorate).

1- چگونه آهن در بدن ما ذخیره می شود؟

بدن بزرگسالان دو مخزن اصلی برای آهن دارد.

- آهن عملکردی که درهموگلوبین، میوگلوبین و آنزیم ها ذخیره می شود.

- آهن ذخیره ای که در فریتین، هموسیدرین و ترانسفرین ذخیره می شود.

2- از چه منابع غذایی آهن بدن تامین می گردد؟

دو فرم غذایی برای آهن وجود دارد. آهن هم و آهن غیر هم . آهن هم از هموگلوبین ، پروتئینی که در گلبول های قرمز وجود دارد مشتق می شود. و این نوع آهن (آهن هم) در منابع جانوری یافت می شود مانند گوشت قرمز، ماهی و ماکیان. در حالیکه آهن در منابع گیاهی مانند عدس و لوبیا نیز یافت می شود که آنرا آهن غیر هم می نامند. این فرم از آهن را برای غنی سازی به سایر غذاها می افزایند. آهن هم بهتر از آهن غیر هم جذب می شود هرچند بیشتر آهن غذایی آهن غیرهم است.

3- به چه دلایلی افراد آهن دریافت می کنند؟

در اغلب موارد مکمل آهن برای درمان کم خونی فقرآهن مورد استفاده قرار می گیرد. کم خونی سبب خستگی و دیگر عوارض می شود.در موارد کم خونی برای درمان حتما به پزشک مراجعه نمائید. 

همچنین در موارد زیر برای درمان کم خونی از مکمل آهن استفاده می شود:

- بارداری

- دوره های شدید قاعدگی

- بیماری های کلیوی

- شیمی درمانی 

همچنین مطالعات نشان می دهد که ازآهن برای درمان بیش فعالی و نقص توجه در کودکان استفاده می شود. هرچند که برای اطمینان از این نتیجه به مطالعات بیشتری نیاز است.

آیا می توان آهن را به صورت طبیعی از غذاها دریافت نمود؟

برای اغلب افراد یک رژیم غذایی مناسب می تواند آهن مورد نیاز را تامین نماید. هرچند امرزوه به دلیل انواع رژیم های غذایی نامناسب  کمبود این ماده مغذی موجود می باشد. منابع غذایی طبیعی حاوی آهن عبارتند از:

- گوشت قرمز، ماهی ، مرغ و ماکیان

- سبزیجات مانند اسفناج ، کلم، کلم بروکلی

- میوه های خشک و مغزها

- لوبیا و عدس و نخودفرنگی

آهن همچنین به بسیاری از غذاهای غنی شده مانند غلات و نان افزوده می شود.
